Why the Number of THC Milligrams Doesn’t Predict Intoxication

Antique key resting on paper with the word “Knowledge,” symbolizing education and informed decision-making.

You’ve probably seen it… THC gummies with 10 milligrams, 50 milligrams, 100 milligrams, or packages that advertise 1,500, 2,500, or 5,000 milligrams per package. Obviously, the bigger the number the easier they are to sell, and for more money. It’s Marketing 101.

The problem is… that’s all it is: marketing.

We’ve all been trained over the years to recognize larger numbers as signifying more value. It seems logical that the 1500-milligram bag of gummies has more than the 1000-milligram bag. If the price of the 1500-bag is only a bit more than the 1000-bag, then we buy the bag with 1500 every time.

With hemp-derived THC gummies, the number of milligrams on the label is often thought of as a volume control knob: More milligrams = More high. In reality, the number of milligrams is at best a rough input, with no reliable output.

Here’s why milligrams matter much less than people think…

Joyful Gummy

1. Hemp-derived gummies vary wildly in absorption

First of all, when you consume a THC gummy, you’re only going to absorb between four and 12 percent of the THC in that gummy. The rest will be processed by your body as waste. Within that range, the amount you do absorb depends on a number of factors not related to the THC itself.

Manufacturers of hemp-derived gummies often use different:

  • Extraction methods
  • Emulsifiers
  • Carriers and sweeteners
  • Active ingredients

These choices affect how efficiently THC is absorbed. Two different gummies can be each labeled as containing 10 mg delta-9 THC, but they’ll deliver very different amounts into your bloodstream. Additionally, studies have shown that THC-V, although not intoxicating alone, can increase the bioavailability of Delta-9/Delta-8 THC, so its inclusion changes how 10 milligrams of Delta-9 will feel.

Same number of milligrams. Very different bioavailability. Very different result.

2. Edibles transform THC into a stronger metabolite

When you eat THC, as opposed to smoking or vaping it, your liver converts it into a metabolite called: 11-hydroxy-THC, which:

  • Feels more intense per milligram
  • More psychoactive than Delta-9 THC
  • Builds more gradually
  • Lasts much longer

This is why low milligram hemp-derived gummies can still feel surprisingly strong, especially for new or occasional users, but also across the board.

3. Cannabinoid blends change how THC feels

Hemp-derived gummies don’t always contain THC alone. They can also include:

  • CBD (to soften or modulate THC)
  • Delta-8 THC (often perceived as less intense than Delta-9)
  • CBG, CBN, among others

The same THC dose can feel calm, buzzy… heavy, or barely noticeable depending on the ratios, not the numbers. And, IT IS ALL about the ratios, not the raw numbers.

Milligrams don’t capture balance.

4. The “entourage effect” is about interaction, not strength

In hemp-derived products, the entourage effect isn’t really about “getting higher.”

It’s about how:

  • Cannabinoids influence each other when blended
  • Terpenes shape perception and tone
  • Formulation affects onset timing and duration
  • Adaptogens and amino acids compliment the experience

A lower-THC gummy with a supportive blend in the optimal ratios, can feel more “complete” and pleasurable than a higher-THC isolate gummy.

Because federal law dictates that hemp-derived delta-9 THC is limited to 0.3 percent by dry weight, so high-quality manufacturers often:

  • Adjust sizes
  • Blend multiple cannabinoids in specific ratios to create targeted effects
  • Use fast- or slow-absorption recipes and tech
  • Use natural adaptogens and amino acids to enhance the effects

This means milligrams alone don’t describe the experience—especially when comparing products that all meet the same legal threshold for THC.

6. Timing mistakes are common with gummies

Hemp-derived gummies are often marketed as “lighter” or “milder,” which leads people to:

  • Re-dose too early
  • Stack doses unknowingly
  • Overshoot their comfort zone

Delayed onset + re-dosing explains most uncomfortable experiences—not high milligrams.

7. Individual response still dominates

Your:

  • Tolerance
  • Metabolism
  • Sensitivity to THC vs CBD
  • Comfort with introspection
  • Past experience

All matter more than the number on the label.

A 5 mg THC, hemp-derived gummy can feel too strong to one person, and negligible to another.

The takeaway

For hemp-derived gummies, knowing the number of THC milligrams is necessary but wildly insufficient.

What drives intoxication is:

Formulation × Cannabinoid Ratios × Absorption × Timing × Individual Physiology & Experience

Milligrams tell you what’s there.
They DO NOT tell you what will happen.
