Why Everyone is Microdosing THC—and It’s Not for the Reason You Think

Microdosing THC is often framed as true progress. As if it’s a smarter way to use cannabis. A wellness-forward alternative to excess.

That story may be flattering—but it’s mostly wrong.

The real reason people microdose THC is much simpler: Since people don’t know how much THC they should take, microdosing is how to avoid taking too much. With use by older Americans increasing, proper dosing is a topic that’s increasingly important.

Microdosing isn’t a breakthrough. It’s a safety mechanism.

The THC Dosage Problem: If THC were easy to dose accurately, microdosing wouldn’t even exist.

We don’t have a special word for “small amounts of coffee.” No one takes “micro sips of wine.” Doctors don’t hand out pills without telling the patient exactly how many they should or shouldn’t take. Those substances have consistent, predictable effects. THC does not.

Ask ten people what a “normal” THC dose is and you’ll get ten different answers—usually followed by a horror story involving edibles and paranoia that lasted for hours. Once you’ve experienced that sort of response, you don’t want to repeat that performance.

THC Feels Fine… Until It Doesn’t

Low doses of THC can feel great:

  • Mild euphoria
  • Relaxation
  • Enhanced creativity
  • Reduced anxiety

Then you cross an invisible line and suddenly the experience changes dramatically:

  • Thoughts loop
  • Anxiety spikes
  • Social confidence collapses
  • Time stops behaving

This isn’t becoming “more high.” It’s a different mental state entirely. And the distance between “pleasant” and “unpleasant” is often much smaller than people expect.

Microdosing isn’t Optimization, it’s Risk Management

People don’t microdose THC because it’s the ideal or optimal thing to do. They microdose because the downside risk of taking too much is far greater than the downside risk of taking too little.

If you undershoot, nothing happens. If you overshoot, your evening is over. So, people adapt. They go low and slow… and they call it microdosing.

It’s not a strategy for optimization, it’s damage control.

Why THC Dosage Is So Unpredictable

The response to THC varies wildly based on:

  • Body fat and metabolism
  • Tolerance and past use
  • Anxiety levels
  • Sleep quality
  • Food intake
  • Fitness
  • Delivery method (smoking vs edibles)
  • Context and expectation

The fact is, two people can take the same labeled dose and have completely different experiences. In fact, the same person can take the same dose on different days and feel differently.

Milligrams alone on the label may look scientific, but milligrams alone don’t produce predictable outcomes, nor do they tell the whole story. Microdosing compensates for that uncertainty by keeping the level of exposure low.

The Edibles Effect
Edibles deserve special mention.

THC edibles feel stronger than smoking because the liver converts Delta-9 THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent compound that creates a deeper, longer-lasting, and more intense effect as compared to smoking, where THC goes straight to the brain. This liver processing means effects are delayed but more powerful.

The delayed onset of the effects, as compared with smoking or vaping, plus the long duration of effects can turn dosage mistakes into extended commitments you wish you hadn’t made. By the time you realize you’ve taken too much, it’s too late and you’re locked in.

Even one bad experience with THC edibles can permanently recalibrate someone’s THC behavior and response. Just consider the alcohol you got really sick on years ago, and never wanted to get near again. (Mine was Southern Comfort, by the way.)

Why “Intentional Use” Is Mostly a Myth

Microdosing is marketed as being intentional, mindful, conscious cannabis use. It sounds more socially acceptable too. But, most people microdosing aren’t actually trying for subtle enhancement. Rather, they’re intentionally avoiding:

  • Anxiety
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Social awkwardness
  • Feeling “stuck”

The intent isn’t to extract the optimal benefits—it’s to avoid regret. Microdosing THC does do one thing extremely well: It makes bad outcomes less likely.

The Honest Takeaway

Microdosing THC is simply what rational people do when they don’t know and trust the dosage.

And until THC becomes predictable, because someone can tell you how much you should take based on your individual profile, microdosing will remain popular for the same reason people put their toes in the water before jumping in.

Not because it’s optimal… because it’s safer.

Martin Andelman is the co-founder and CEO at Deltrium, a company dedicated to producing the most advanced and highest quality, all-natural THC-based gummies for targeted effects available anywhere. Martin, at 64 years old, has a lifetime of familiarity with cannabis, but his intensive study of the subject over the last five years has made him a thought leader and expert.

Today, Deltrium’s products are offered in pharmacies and other alternative health providers, in addition to dispensaries and other specialty retailers.

Harnessing the power of what scientists are calling “the entourage effect,” Deltrium gummies blend THC with adaptogens and amino acids, like Cordyceps, Lion’s Mane, Ashwagandah, Passion Flower and L-Theanine, which is found in green tea.

To address the dosing problem, Deltrium’s one-of-a-kind weighted dosing algorithm, consists of questions that you answer about you in order to receive your prescribed, optimal initial dose. Our dosing algorithm took two years to develop and has been proven effective in making sure that no one take too much or too little… rather, our customers take the right amount for them.

Deltrium also includes its unique, patent-pending gummy cutter, called the DeltriumDivider, which makes it very easy to cut gummies into quarters for accurate dosing. And, Deltrium gummies are all double-blind lab tested so you always know exactly what’s inside.
